Fairfield by Marriott Bintulu Paragon has officially begun in-house composting of food waste, including kitchen scraps, bakery discards, and restaurant leftovers, within its nursery compound. This marks a significant milestone in the Towards Zero Food Waste in Bintulu project, jointly spearheaded by Universiti Putra Malaysia Kampus Bintulu Sarawak (UPMKB) and the Bintulu Development Authority (BDA).
The Hotel first participated in the project’s Stakeholder Engagement session held on 18–19 February 2025 at UPMKB, followed by hosting a food waste reduction seminar on 27 March 2025 at their premises. These early engagements have since led to concrete action, with Fairfield now repurposing food waste into compost to support on-site landscaping and green maintenance.
This initiative reflects the growing role of industry players in taking practical, localized steps toward organic waste reduction. The BDA-UPMKB project team will continue engaging additional stakeholders across Bintulu to facilitate similar efforts in building a circular and sustainable waste management systems.
