Food waste is a growing environmental and social concern in Malaysia. Each year, thousands of tonnes of food waste are discarded, causing landfills to fill up with organic waste that releases harmful greenhouse gases as it decomposes. This issue affects not only waste management but also food security and community well-being.
The Towards Zero Food Waste in Bintulu project aims to lead the way in addressing this crisis. It is a collaboration between the Bintulu Development Authority (BDA), Universiti Putra Malaysia Sarawak (UPMS), and the Tokyo University of Agriculture (Tokyo NODAI). The project focuses on community engagement and education, encouraging households, schools, local businesses and other relevant stakeholders to reduce food waste and to convert unavoidable waste into compost for productive use.
By building awareness and practical solutions together, we can create a cleaner environment and a sustainable circular system for Bintulu’s future.
