IEB CONDUCTS MANGROVE CONSERVATION MOBILITY PROGRAM WITH TOKYO UNIVERSITY OF AGRICULTURE

Institute of Ecosystem Science Borneo (IEB) successfully conducted the Tokyo NODAI–UPMKB Borneo Mangrove Exploration Student Inbound Program 2025, involving 10 students from Tokyo University of Agricultures Mangrove Research Club. Organized by IEB under the leadership of Program Director Dr. Keeren Sundara Rajoo and co-organized by the Regional Forest Office Miri, represented by Pn. Ajiah Hamjah, the program took place from 1 to 3 March 2025 at Kuala Sibuti, Sarawak.

Due to travel difficulties, the students were unable to visit UPMKB. Thus, the opening ceremony was officiated virtually by Dr. Syeed Saifulazry Osman Al-Edrus, Director of IEB. The program included a briefing by Mr. Ahmah Bin Bujang of Oasis Timber Co. at Kuala Sibuti Mangrove Forest, who explained how mangroves are harvested and managed sustainably in accordance with the guidelines set by the Forest Department Sarawak. Additionally, Mr. Abd Ajis Taib and Mr. Sunni Mali of Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) conducted a session at Sibuti Wildlife Sanctuary, detailing the measures taken to ensure the preservation of Sarawaks mangrove ecosystems.

Dr. Syeed emphasized that in the face of global climate change, mangroves play a crucial role in sequestering carbon and protecting coastal communities. Therefore, this collaborative effort not only deepened the students understanding of mangrove conservation but also reinforced IEBs commitment to fostering international academic exchanges in environmental sustainability. Naoki, a participant in the program, shared that the experience was invaluable, as it provided the students with their first opportunity to explore and learn about Borneos mangrove ecosystems. He expressed hope that the program would become an annual event for the Mangrove Research Club, and also hoped to return to Sarawak soon to conduct forestry related research.
