On 27th August 2024, the Putra Wings @ SKST English Immersion Project, under CALC@UPMKB, organised the Once Upon a Mask program at SK Sungai Tisang, Bintulu, involving 60 students from the school. This program, sponsored by the Pehin Sri Adenan Satem Research Chair through the Pehin Sri Adenan Satem Grant, is this schools third and final program.
The Once Upon a Mask program combines storytelling and visual arts activities to enhance the participants interest in English. Creating character masks from pop-up storybooks allowed the participants to explore stories more deeply, express creativity, and strengthen their English communication skills. The program received very positive feedback, with over 90% of participants expressing enjoyment and satisfaction. Favourite activities included reading storybooks, making character masks, and interacting with peers. Most participants found the programs content easy to understand and appreciated the assistance and guidance from the facilitators. These aspects indicate high engagement and a positive learning experience through the Once Upon a Mask program.
This program follows up on the Pop-Up Story Time program held in May 2023 and the reading program organised by teachers in November 2023 using the same module. The Pehin Sri Adenan Satem Grant also funded the donation of over 300 English storybooks to the SK Sungai Tisang library.
The Once Upon a Mask program was led by Pn. Joyce Morris Kapong, with committee members including En. Peter Clarence Cluny, Tn. Hj. Fakhzan Hj. Buang, Pn. Nur Asyiqin Zaidi, Pn. Ramuni Incham, En. Ko Wei Liong, and En. Woon Wai Cheong from CALC@UPMKB and Cik Racheal Meannilver Junsen, an English teacher from SK Sungai Tisang. The program was also supported by 17 student and teacher facilitators from UPMKB and SK Sungai Tisang.
Our most profound appreciation goes to the Headmistress, Pn. Arbah Tusin, and all students and teachers of SK Sungai Tisang for their participation and support. Special thanks to the Pehin Sri Adenan Satem Research Chair, particularly its Chairman, Associate Professor Dr. Mohamad Maulana Magiman, for supporting all knowledge transfer programs organised by the Putra Wings @ SKST English Immersion Project. We also extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the facilitators for their dedication and invaluable contributions to the programs success.
In attendance at the program closing ceremony were the schools headmistress, teachers, students, and En. Awangku Ali Udin Awang Adenani and Pn. Khadijah Yahya from the Bintulu Divisional Education Office.
